Overview

Choquequirao is an archaeological site located in the Cusco Region of Peru. It was built by the Inca Empire during its heyday and is believed to have been a royal estate for one of the last ruling Inca emperors, Tupac Yupanqui. The site’s name means “cradle of gold” in Quechua, and it has often been compared to Machu Picchu due to its similar architecture and location high in the Andes Mountains. While Choquequirao may not be as well-known as Machu Picchu, it still offers a unique glimpse into Incan culture and history.

The ruins at Choquequirao have several structures including temples, storehouses, plazas, baths, irrigation channels, and other features typical of an ancient civilization such as this one. Some walls are over 10 m (33 ft) tall while others are decorated with intricate carvings depicting llamas and other animals that were important to the Incas’ religious beliefs.

Although much work has been done on restoring parts of Choquequirao since its rediscovery in 1909, there is still much left unexploredโ€”including many areas that remain completely untouched since they were abandoned centuries ago. For those looking for something off-the-beaten path when visiting Peru, a visit to Choquequirao should definitely be included on their itinerary!

Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan city located in the Andes mountains of Peru. Built around 1450, it was abandoned by the time Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1532 and remained largely unknown until 1911 when American historian Hiram Bingham rediscovered it. The site consists of a number of structures built on narrow terraces cut into the mountain overlooking two deep river gorges, surrounded by lush vegetation and stunning views.

The ruins are made up of three main areas: agricultural terraces, temples, and residences. There are also numerous other structures such as walls, ceremonial fountains and stairways that help make Machu Picchu a unique archaeological wonder.

If you have purchased an entrance ticket to Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu mountain, our staff will guide you to the respective entrance. After the tour, we will return to Aguas Calientes town, where you will be free to have lunch at a local restaurant. The price of the lunch is not included in the tour cost.

In the afternoon, we will board a train to Ollantaytambo. After arriving there, our staff will transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco city. You will be arriving there around 10:00 pm.
