Overview

Choquequirao is an archaeological site located in the La Convencion province, in Cusco – Peru. It is situated on a ridge between two mountain peaks, at an altitude of 3,500 meters (11,482 feet) above sea level. The site was once part of the Inca Empire and was built around 1450 CE.

The ruins at Choquequirao are some of the most impressive and well-preserved Inca sites in South America. The complex includes a large plaza area with terraces that were used for farming as well as religious ceremonies and festivals. There are also several structures including temples, palaces, storehouses and ritual baths which have all been beautifully preserved over time.

Tour Plan

Day 1 Cusco - Cachora - Capuliyoc - Chikisqa - Santa Rosa Baja

At 3:30 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. Then, we will take a short trip to the community of San Pedro de Cachora. We will stop there for breakfast. Following that, we will hike to Capuliyoc, which is located at 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) above sea level.

Then, we will descend to Chikisqa, which is located at 1,800 meters  (5,905 feet) above sea level. We will stop there for lunch. Afterwards, we will pass La Playa Rosalina before arriving at Santa Rosa Baja. We will set up our campground, have dinner, and spend the night there.

Day 2 Santa Rosa Baja - Maranpata - Choquequirao Campsite

We will continue our journey to Santa Rosa Alta after breakfast. After trekking for some time, we will arrive at the Maranpata overlook, from where we will get spectacular views of the surrounding cloud forests. We will be able to see condors soaring over the valley if we are lucky. Then, we will stop for lunch in Maranpata.

Afterwards, we will continue our journey to Choquequirao. We will arrive at a campground near the archeological site in the afternoon. We will eat dinner and stay the night there.

Day 3 Choquequirao - Maranpata - Santa Rosa Baja

After breakfast, we will depart our campsite early in the morning. Then, we will visit the Inca ruins of Choquequirao. You will be given a complete tour of the archaeological site. Then, we will return to our campsite, where we will stop to have lunch.

After lunch, we will cross through Maranpata before arriving at Santa Rosa Baja. We will set up our campsite, have dinner, and spend the rest of the night there.

Day 4 Santa Rosa Baja - Chikisqa - Coca Masana

We will leave Santa Rosa Baja after breakfast. Then, we will climb to Chikisqa, where we will stop for lunch. Afterwards, we will hike to Coca Masana, where we will set up our campsite, have dinner, and spend the rest of the night.

Day 5 Coca Masana - Cachora - Ollantaytambo- Aguas Calientes

We will depart Coca Masana early in the morning. Then, we will hike to Cachora town, where we will stop to eat lunch. After that, we will board our private vehicle to go to Ollantaytambo. We will be driving for around 4 hours. Once at Ollantaytambo, we will take a train to Aguas Calientes.

After arriving at Aguas Calientes, our staff will bring you to your hotel room. Then, you will have free time to explore the town and its famed hot springs.

Day 6 Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes - Cusco

We will get up early to eat breakfast. Then, we will catch a bus to Machu Picchu. The bus ride lasts between 30 and 40 minutes. We will enter the Inca city of Machu Picchu after passing through the security checkpoints. Then, you will have a complete guided tour of the citadel.

Machu Picchu consists of more than 200 buildings including temples, terraces, plazas, baths and palaces made out of granite blocks fitted together without mortar. It is also home to many agricultural terraces which were used by its inhabitants to grow crops such as maize and potatoes.

The city sits atop two peaks at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level in an area surrounded by lush tropical rainforest making it one of South America’s most spectacular sights.

In 1983 UNESCO declared Machu Picchu a World Heritage Site and since then has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in South America due to its unique architecture and stunning location high up in the mountains.

If you have booked an entrance ticket to Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu mountain, our staff will guide you to the respective entrance. After the tour, we will return to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time to have lunch at a local restaurant. The price of the lunch is not included in the tour cost.

We will take a train to Ollantaytambo later in the afternoon. After arriving at Ollantaytambo, we will transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco. You will be arriving there around 10:00 pm.
