Overview

We will depart early from Arequipa and travel toward Colca Canyon, crossing the high Andean plateaus. Along the way, we will stop in villages and viewpoints to observe local culture and traditions. The route will offer views of mountains and valleys, creating opportunities for photography and nature observation. This journey will introduce us to the landscapes of Colca Canyon, Peru.

We will begin the trek by following trails into the canyon, where we will observe native plants and animals. We may see Andean condors soaring above the cliffs. Local guides will share information about the canyon’s history and surrounding communities. We will spend the night in a lodge or guesthouse near the canyon.

On the second day, we will continue trekking through terraced landscapes shaped by centuries of cultivation. We will visit villages and meet residents who maintain traditional practices and crafts. Along the route, we will stop at viewpoints with wide views of Colca Canyon, which drops 3,270 meters  below the rim. After completing the trek, we will return to Arequipa.

This Colca Canyon trekking tour will combine outdoor activity, cultural experiences, and scenic landscapes in one journey.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Arequipa – Cruz del Cóndor – Cabanaconde – San Juan de Chuccho – Oasis Sangalle

We will leave Arequipa at 3:00 AM and travel across the high Andean plains toward Chivay. In Chivay, we will have breakfast before continuing the journey. Our first stop will be the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, where we will watch condors soaring above the Colca Canyon and enjoy panoramic views of cliffs and valleys.

We will then continue to Cabanaconde, the starting point of our trek. From there, we will descend along traditional Andean paths, cross hanging bridges, and pass through areas with native plants and wildlife. In San Juan de Chuccho, we will have lunch in a local home and experience regional culture.

After a short rest, we will walk for about three more hours to reach Oasis Sangalle, a green area with palm trees and natural pools. We will spend the night in rustic adobe bungalows surrounded by the canyon.

We will begin early in the morning from Sangalle and trek back to Cabanaconde. We will enjoy sunrise views over the Colca Canyon during the climb. After reaching the top, we will have breakfast and prepare for the return trip.

On the way, we will stop at Antahuilque to see the pre-Inca terraces carved into the canyon walls. We will then relax in the Chacapi hot springs after the trek. We will have lunch in Chivay to recover energy for the journey. Before returning to Arequipa, we will stop at the Volcanoes viewpoint to admire the snow-capped peaks.
