Machu Picchu: A Timeless Wonder

Perched high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Machu Picchu remains one of the most awe-inspiring ancient sites worldwide. This Inca citadel, hidden for centuries, was rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. Its purpose remains a topic of scholarly debate. Some believe it was a royal estate. Others argue it was a sacred religious site. Regardless, this stone citadel stands as a testament to Inca engineering and architectural prowess. Constructed in the 15th century, the site blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings. Its buildings align with astronomical events, showcasing the Incas' sophisticated understanding of astronomy. The Intihuatana stone is one such example, believed to act as an astronomical clock. The terraces, once used for agriculture, demonstrate advanced knowledge in farming and irrigation. Visitors today marvel at the precision of its stonework. Stones were cut so meticulously that not even a knife blade could fit between them. Despite the absence of mortar, these structures have withstood centuries of earthquakes. The mystery of how the Incas transported these massive stones remains, adding to Machu Picchu's allure.

Info

Machu Picchu was constructed with walls made of polished dry stone in the traditional Inca manner. The Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Hall of the Three Windows are its three principal buildings. To better convey the original appearance of the buildings to visitors, the majority of the outlying structures have been rebuilt. 30% of Machu Picchu had been restored by 1976, and restoration work is ongoing.
